This 1749 translation of the Eclogues of Virgil is unusual in that it contains numerous hand coloured plates on botanical subjects. The translation was completed by the botanist John Martyn (1699-1768) and includes notes on the natural history of the Roman Empire. Martyn was one of the earliest proponents for a botanical society in England and was a correspondent of the noted Swedish scientist Carl Linnaeus. Although it contains fewer images than his 1741 edition of Virgil's Georgics (RCIN 1050935), the comprehensive notes and accompanying plates by Martyn still provide an insight into eighteenth century perceptions of ancient agriculture and pastoral poetry.
