Quintilian was a notable teacher of rhetoric during the first century AD, counting Pliny the Younger as one of his pupils. His surviving work, the Institutio Oratoria, a practical guide to the art of public speaking, provides an excellent insight into education in the early-Roman Empire. The Institutio, describes how one ought to be taught rhetoric from being a baby through to adulthood. It covers all aspects of rhetoric, from grammar and the construction of speeches, through to providing guidelines on the correct dress and gestures. Quintilian's instructions were influential in the teaching of rhetoric through to the eighteenth century, and several editions were printed, such as this one, translated into Italian and printed in Venice in 1569.
