'Dombey and Son' was published in monthly instalments between October 1846 and April 1848. Its high sales exceeded all expectations and proved to be very significant for Dickens. Writing to his friend and literary advisor John Forster he remarked ‘The profits of the half-year are brilliant’. Through its success, his financial uncertainties were brought to an end.
