This book by the diplomat Sir Thomas Elyot was written as a guide to train statesmen and was first published in 1531 and dedicated to Henry VIII. It was the first educational treatise published in English and was very popular, going through many editions for the remainder of the century. Elyot advocated that education ought to be based heavily on the study of classical authors, something that remained integral to the education of statesmen until the twentieth century.
Provenance
Likely acquired by George IV when Prince of Wales for his library at Carlton House. Bears his bookplate, and that of Queen Victoria, used 1863-1901.
