Prior to the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 1530s, the religious orders in England owned vast swathes of land throughout the kingdom. This late medieval charter confirms the rights that had been granted to the Knights Hospitaller of the Order of St John during the reign of Henry II (r. 1154-89). It was examined by the Bishop of Norwich John Wakeryng (d.1425) and the Canterbury clerk Henry Manpas, although no seal survives to accompany the document. Having previously been described as ‘an original charter of Henry VIII’ in Sotheby’s sale catalogue of Thomas Phillips’ manuscripts, the charter actually dates from the reign of Henry IV (1399-1413).
Surprisingly, the verso of the document presents a large Elizabethan amateur drawing in brown ink and red chalk, portraying an English warship named ‘the Elzabeth’ [sic], and headed by the text "God Savez the Queenez". A male figure also appears aboard, holding what seems to be an hourglass.
Provenance
Purchased at the sale of Thomas Phillips' manuscripts in April 1911 for £5 and 5 shillings (lot 539, where it was mistakenly described as an 'original charter of Henry VIII'). It is not clear when it was accessioned to the Royal Library.
