The Book of Hours was one of the most popular books of the Middle Ages. A collection of prayers and Biblical texts designed to be read several times a day, these books often formed the basis of an individual's private daily devotions.
This Book of Hours was probably illuminated in France in the fifteenth century. It is decorated throughout with floral borders and several historiated initials depicting the Gospel authors, various (predominantly female) saints, and scenes from the Life of Christ. The book also contains seven larger illuminations, several of which feature a female figure that may have been the manuscript's patron or owner.
The seven larger illuminations depict: the Virgin holding the dying Christ in her lap (the Pieta) alongside the Saints James and Catherine and a female figure holding a book (possibly the patron or owner of the manuscript); the Annunciation; the Mass of St Gregory with the instruments of the Passion; King David praying to God; a funeral service attended by monks, an Archangel, St Christopher with the Christ-child and a female figure in black robes and a wimple (possibly the book's patron or owner); the Virgin and Child; God the Father holding the crucified Son in his lap; the Virgin (?) reading to a kneeling female figure with a wimple, holding a green book under one arm (possibly the book's patron). -
