This gothic short story, in which couriers swap tales of ghostly apparitions and premonitions, was first published in 1852 in The Keepsake, a literary annual that ran from 1828 to 1857. The manuscript is in Dickens’ own hand and includes corrections, inky fingerprints, and instructions to the printer. Dickens wrote on one side only of loose sheets, which have since been guarded and bound together into this volume.
Provenance
Acquired by Queen Mary when Princess of Wales before 1903, who donated it to the Royal Library.
