James II (1633-1701) wrote a small notebook of advice to his son, James Francis Edward, known as the Old Pretender (1688-1766), while living in exile (see RCIN 1006012). In it, he advocates religious tolerance, and advises his son against making the same mistakes he did. The notebook came to Windsor with the Stuart Papers, which had been brought from the continent with some difficulty under the direction of George IV when Prince Regent. His mother, Queen Charlotte, copied out the notebook and added prints to illustrate it, forming this large folio version. There are two prints by George Perfect Harding in this volume, one a copy of a portrait of Louise de Kérouaille, Duchess of Portsmouth (1649–1734) and the other of Thomas, Lord Clifford (1630–1673). This is perhaps the volume referenced in Oppé, A.P., 1950. 'English Drawings in the Collection of His Majesty The King at Windsor Castle, London', no. 314.
