  • This collection of letters relates to the construction of the George V Memorial in Windsor in 1936. It consists mainly of the correspondence between the Royal Librarian, Sir Owen Morshead and the architect, Sir Edwin Lutyens. Lutyens, by this time, had cemented his reputation as one of Britain's foremost architects from his commissions in India (which included the Viceroy's House in New Delhi) and in Britain. He had also previously worked with the Royal Family, designing Queen Mary's Doll's House at Windsor Castle. The memorial to King George V was one of his final commissions before the outbreak of war in 1939 and it can be seen from the letters that the architect was in constant contact with Sir Owen Morshead, who then passed his proposals to Queen Mary and King Edward VIII for approval. The letters also provide an insight into the personality of the architect; sketches and notes which often feature, adhere to reports from contemporary accounts stating that Lutyens was a humorous man who had earned a reputation as a popular social figure.
