Thomas Moore was an Irish poet, translator and balladeer. He became famous as a song writer and singer, and published both books of poetry and songs. He was patronised by Lord Moira, who in turn introduced him to the Prince of Wales, later George IV. As well as a poet and song-writer, Moore was a strong Whig supporter and political satirist. Becoming known for his songs and singing performances around 1808, Moore was commissioned to write the words for a series of characteristic Irish airs to be set to music arranged by the Irish composer Sir John Stevenson (1761–1833). Moore's own popularity as a performer ensured that the published songs were popular in fashionable society, and the series ran from 1808 to 1834. This edition of the collected melodies was published in 1846, with the new addition of illustrations by the Irish painter and illustrator Daniel Maclise (1806-1870). Maclise was a well-known for both history paintings and portraits, and was patronised by Queen Victoria. He also created designs for prints, mainly lithographs, which were printed as individual sheets, and as book illustrations. As well as illustrating Moore's 'Melodies', Maclise also illustrated works by Dickens and Tennyson. In his preface to the illustrated edition, Moore wrote: 'I deem it most fortunate for this new Edition that the rich, imaginative powers of Mr. Maclise have been employed in its adornment; and that, to complete its national character, an Irish pencil has lent its aid to an Irish pen in rendering due honour and homage to our country's ancient harp.' Maclise's illustrations border every page of the book, and are heavily influenced in style by German illustrated books, and by the Victorian revival of interest in medieval art and culture. This copy was originally part of the library at Osborne House, Queen Victoria's holiday residence on the Isle of Wight.
