Manuscript translation of Friedrich Schiller's 1798 poem Das Lied von der Glocke ('The Song of the Bell'). The translation appears have been given to Victoria, Duchess of Kent at St Leonards-on-Sea near Hastings in 1834, perhaps during her and Princess (later Queen) Victoria's stay in the resort in the Winter of 1834-5. Schiller's poem is one of the most significant in German literature and reflects on the course of human life and its significant moments through bellfounding and the ringing or tolling of bells.
