The rectangular tester with four vase finials at each corner mounted with ostrich plumes. The head cloth, bedspread and curtain linings of crimson silk. With an arched head board edged with galloon. Valances, tester roof and bedspread decorated with scrolled galloon designs, with protective crimson 'tour de lit' or 'case curtain'.
The bed was bought by William III from his Lord Chamberlain, the Earl of Jersey, in 1699. On 6 November the Earl signed a warrant 'for the upholsterer to be sent to Hounslow to take down beds and other furntiure and thence to Hampton Court to sett up the necessary furniture etc.'
Several tradesmen were involved in fulfilling the installation of the 'Crimson Velvet bed sold to his Majesty by the Earl of Jersey' including the upholsterer Richard Bealing, joiner Thomas Roberts, mercer William Sherrarrd, lacemaker William Elliot (supplier of the silver-gilt 'orris lace' borders), fringemaker Thomas Carr and feather-dresser Jonathan Chape. The greatest cost was for '70 yards 1/2 of crimson braod florence Taffata for a Tour du liet, the counterpoint and for cases for chaires and stooles at 17/- per yard ... £59.18.6'.
The Bedchamber was also fitted out with en suite stools, an easy chair and an armchair.Provenance
