The second edition of Holinshed’s Chronicles, published in 1587, was used extensively as a source by Shakespeare. He drew on it for his History plays, as well as for Macbeth. Shakespeare adapted the history of the life of Macbeth, King of Scotland, given in the Chronicles to make the story more flattering to James VI and I, who claimed descent from the character Banquo.
