This history of the Portuguese in India was written by the Italian historian Giovanni Pietro Maffei while resident at Lisbon in the late 1570s. Maffei was commissioned to write the history by Henry I, Cardinal and King of Portugal, who wished to glorify Portuguese colonial endeavours in the Indian Ocean. Maffei spent several years researching the work, which was published at Florence in 1588. This edition was printed at Venice the following year.
