Pierre François Xavier de Charlevoix was a French Jesuit missionary principally known for his career in Canada in the early eighteenth century and his writings on the history of French colonisation in the region. He was a prolific writer and wrote many works on the history of the conquest and colonisation of the Americas and the Jesuit missions that followed the arrival of Europeans.
This is his 1744 history of New France from the first European settlements to 1736. Drawing on his own experiences travelling in Canada and working with Indigenous populations as well as information taken from other sources, the book was one of the most comprehensive histories of New France up to that date. -
