Cetewayo and his White Neighbours was the first book published by Sir Henry Rider Haggard, better known for his 1885 novel, King Solomon’s Mines. Written while he was studying for the bar and published in 1882, the book is a criticism of British colonial policy in South Africa where the colonial government was pursuing an aggressive policy to form a confederation of the colonies in the area. It concerns the actions of the Zulu king, Cetshwayo kaMpande, who consistently sought peace against British aggression in his kingdom. His cause was taken up by many in Britain opposed to the country’s foreign policy and several articles and books of this kind were published in the early 1880s (see also RCIN 1145803).
