Published in 1590, this concerns early British history. It was written by John Twyne (c. 1501-81) a schoolmaster and MP for Canterbury, and published posthumously by his son, Thomas. Studies of Ancient Britain in the sixteenth century were still dominated by the twelfth century history of Geoffrey of Monmouth. Monmouth’s history remained wildly popular as it recounted legends such as those of King Arthur as historical fact. Twyne’s history discounted Monmouth and viewed his account of the period with much scepticism.

Acquired by the Royal Library before 1853.
