This volume lacks the engravings of Charles II and Sanderson.
Binding information
Contemporary dark brown calf binding; both sides re-backed onto restored spine; original binding now very damaged.
Identical design on both sides: outer double fillet gold-tooled border with additional double fillet lines gold-tooled diagonally in each corner. In the centre, the gold-tooled monogram of Charles II (CAR and REX intertwined), surmounted by a crown and with an unfurling ribbon below containing the motto: ‘DIEV ET MON DROIT’. Monogram worn and damaged; identical to that used on RCIN 1023277 (Add B 32.1b), also a 1658 copy of Sanderson’s A Compleat history of … King Charles.
Spine restored, in modern dark brown calf. Divided into six compartments by raised bands, with blind-tooled fillet lines on either side of bands and blind-tooled bunch of flowers in the first, third, fifth and sixth compartments. In the second compartment, the gold-tooled title: ‘THE REIGN OF KING CHARLES’ and in the fourth: ‘SANDERSON’. Two blind-tooled fillet lines on tail of spine, with gold-tooled lettering: ‘LONDON 1658’.
Repairs to corners on both boards and modern paper pastedowns.Provenance
