The Histoire Naturelle et Morale des Iles Antilles de l’Amerique is a survey of the Caribbean by the Huguenot minister Charles de Rochefort (1605-83). First published anonymously at Rotterdam in 1658, the book was often misattributed to the French lexicographer César de Rochefort (1630-90). This is the second edition of 1665, also made at Rotterdam. Little is known of de Rochefort’s life, but it appears he travelled to the Caribbean to serve as a chaplain to French-speaking Protestants in the region. This work was based on de Rochefort’s own research but also the writings of others such as Jean-Baptiste du Terte. The Histoire is divided into two parts, the first dealing with the geography and natural history of the Caribbean with the second looking at its people and the use of enslaved labour in the colonies there. De Rochefort was also interested in Indigenous peoples and included a chapter on the Apalachee people of north-western Florida and a vocabulary of the Kalinago language, compiled by the Dominican missionary Raymond Breton.
Provenance
Likely bound for Isabella, Queen Consort of Spain (1692-1766). Probably acquired for the Royal Library before 1860.
