The reign of Mughal emperor Shah Alam II (1728-1806) saw the decline of his empire and the rise to power of the East India Company. In 1765 he signed the Treaty of Allahabad, which handed the Company control of the province of Bengal. The author this history, William Francklin (1763-1839), was an officer in the East India Company army. His text is a continuation of the Siyar al-Mutakherin (1780) by Mughal historian Ghulam Hussain Khan Tabatabai, which he interspersed with geographical observations on several of the principal cities of India. The illustrations include with four engraved portrait plates after Mughal paintings.
Among the appendices is the translation of a letter written in Persian in 1785 from the Mughal Prince Jivan Bakhsh, eldest Son Shah Alam, to George III.Provenance
