A Collection of declarations, treaties and other principal passages concerning the differences betwixt King Charles I and his two houses of Parliament. 1662

Contemporary binding in mottled brown calf; central panel of contemporary binding on both sides re-backed onto restored dark brown mottled calf on sides and spine; gold-tooling throughout. On the right side of the binding, outer restored section tooled with an outer single fillet border, followed by a dotted roll and double fillet border, with second border marking the restored from the original binding. On original section of binding, central ‘panel’ formed of vine roll and double fillet, surmounted on the four corners by a triangular vine tool with vine and floral finial, identical to that used on RCIN 1051234 (Add B 35). In the centre of the panel, the quartered arms of England, France, Scotland and Ireland (Charles II), surrounded by the garter and surmounted by a crown, with architectural and floral border and flanked by busts of two beasts. Above the arms, possibly executed later, a flower-head tool followed by the inscription: ‘DONO, DEDIT EDMUNDUS COLE DE WARDENS HALL AGRO ESSEXENSI ARMIGER’ (‘Donated, Given to Edmund Cole of Wardens Hall in the land of Essex, Arm bearer’). Left side contains identical design to the right, but without the dedicatory inscription. Spine completely restored, divided into six compartments by raised bands with single line fillet to either side. Second compartment tooled in gold: ‘COLLECTION OF DECLARATION TREATIES’ and third: ‘LONDON MDCLXII’, with all other compartments gold-tooled in the centre with thistle and two flowers (one tool). Head and tail of spine decorated with single and triple fillet and dotted roll lines. All edges gilt. The triangular corner tool used on this volume is also used on several books in the British Library identified as being bound by Samuel Mearne: BL 19 f 1; BL Davis 185; BL 83 l 3. Unclear who Edmund Cole, ‘arm bearer’ is. The slightly inferior quality of this inscription would suggest it was added later. Wardens Hall could be what is now known as ‘Wardens Hall Estate’ to the west of Chelmsford, near Fyfield, Essex. | 38.0 x 4.5 cm (book measurement (inventory)) | RCIN 1020268

  • This book on the treaties between Charles I and Parliament is bound in mottled brown calf and tooled in gold with the arms of Charles II. It may have been bound in the workshop of Samuel Mearne as several of the tools, including the floral roll and triangular corner tools are used on other bindings associated with his workshop.

The Latin inscription gold-tooled above the arms reads:
‘DONO, DEDIT EDMUNDUS COLE DE WARDENS HALL AGRO ESSEXENSI ARMIGER’ (‘Given as a gift by Edmund Cole of Wardens Hall in the land of Essex, Arm bearer’). It was probably added later, possibly at the request of Edmund Cole. It is unclear who Edmund Cole, ‘arm bearer’ might be, but Wardens Hall is possibly the area now known as ‘Wardens Hall Estate’ to the west of Chelmsford, near Fyfield, Essex.

    Provenance

Owned by an Edmund Cole, ‘arm bearer’, possibly of Wardens Hall, Fyfield, Essex; purchased for the Royal Library in the Chalmers' Sale, 1841.
