Henry Mayhew’s London labour and the London poor greatly influenced representations of the working class in Victorian literature, including in works by Charles Dickens. First published in 1851, it began as a series of articles which appeared in the Morning Chronicle from 1849 to 1850, which were then collected together and published in two volumes, with a third and fourth being added to the 1861 edition. Mayhew interviewed people living and working in London, and described in his volumes their clothing, their customs, and how and where they lived, with vivid anecdotal accounts. His work resulted in the establishment of a fund to assist the poor. Mayhew was also a playwright and one of the founders and early editors of Punch.
