An illustration to the late 17th century Hindi poem Rasikapriya by Keshavdas with the popular literary figures of Radha and Krishna depicted as the protagonists. On a moonlit night, a sakhi (female friend) defends Krishna as Radha speaks ill of him. In the upper background, Krishna looks out of an upper story window beyond the palace walls. The painter uses the visual trope of Proshitapatika Nayika, the lady whose lover is away.
The style of painting and its borders associate it with the artists of the Punjab Hills in the early 19th century. There is a later misattribution to the artist Purkhu on the cover sheet.
Provenance
This painting is one of a group twelve (RCINS 925221-32) found in an Indian silk brocade folder acquired by Edward VII when Prince of Wales, likely during his Tour of India in 1875-6.
