शिवा गंगाधारा Shiva Gangadhara (Shiva as the Bearer of the Ganges) 1800-50
-
A depiction of the Hindu tale in which Shiva captures the river Ganges (Ganga) in his braided hair. After the river threatened to fall to earth and destroy it, Shiva trapped her in his hair and safely spouted her in small streams. He rests on his traditional vehicle, the bull Nandi, as Parvati, Shiva’s wife, offers him an amalaki fruit.
The style of the painting associates it with the artists of the Punjab Hills in the early 19th century.Provenance
This painting is one of a group twelve (RCINS 925221-32) found in an Indian silk brocade folder acquired by Edward VII when Prince of Wales, likely during his Tour of India in 1875-6.
