30 ff : col. ill.
An album of paintings by North Indian artists depicting Hindu gods. These include illustrations of the Trimurti (Brahma Vishnu, Shiva); Vishnu and Lakshmi; a series depicting the ten incarnations of Vishnu; and stories from the life of Krishna (the eighth avatar of Vishnu).
Most of the pages have the same borders consisting of a single sheet of pale orange paper densely flecked with broken pieces of gold leaf. Each sheet is edged with a 5mm orange border.
The paintings were bound into a green morocco album in the late 19th century. This was one of three albums presented to Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, on 27th November 1875 in Bombay (Mumbai) when he attended the wedding celebrations for the son of Sir Mangaldas Nathubhoy (1832-1890), a local businessman, social reformer and member of the Royal Asiatic Society. The other albums are RCINs 1005114 and 1005115.Provenance
Presented to King Edward VII when Prince of Wales during his tour of India in 1875 by Mangaldas Nathubhoy.
