Krishna dances with one hand above his head to the music of four gopis (cow herds). In the background, painted in a less precise hand, rain falls upon Mount Govardhan, the sacred hill in the region of Braj. According to Hindu belief, Krishna held the mountain above his head with his little finger for seven days on order to protect Braj from the floods sent by Indra.
