recto:
Bear, 17th century
A small, square nim-rang (half-colour) painting by a Persian artist of a bear looking left over its shoulder. The drawing has been placed at the centre of an illuminated panel with floral arabesques in blue, orange, pink and gold.
verso:
Mughal courtier, late 17th century.
A portrait of a bearded Mughal courtier wearing a muslin jama over striped blue and white pyjama with a plain white turban, facing left. His left hand rests on the handle of a long staff and a strand of red prayer beads hangs from his plain patka. He stands against a grey background with a dark green ground underfoot and a pale blue and white streaked sky above.
The inscription identifying the figure as the 14th century Shah Nizam of Narnaul is likely erroneous.
