recto:
Men in a garden, early 17th century.
Four young men in a walled garden, probably an illustration to a Persian text. They wear eastern Persian turbans and are in such animated discussion that they disturb the gardener in his work. The garden is of quadripartite 'chahar bagh' form: a symmetrical plan with stone paths and a central raised marble pool surrounded by flowering plants. Its water source is a Persian wheel turning on the left which empties water into the stone-lined runnel raised above the wall. The men stand beneath a two-storey pavilion, the upper story of which is open to catch the breeze. A door keeper stands guard at the entrance gate opposite while two men walk past, evidently aware of the commotion going on inside.
verso:
Lioness, early 17th century.
A lioness, whose body is discretely outlined in gold, rests on grass beside a leafy tree toward which her head is turned.
The lioness’s body is discretely outlined in gold paint.
