recto:
Cow and calf, 17th century.
A nim-rang (half-colour) drawing of a cow facing right suckling its calf, against a plain background. The cow has a rope loosely tied around her neck and the calf wears a string of golden bells.
The plants and tufts of grass at the lower part of the painting and the blue and white streaks of sky are later additions.
verso:
Portrait of Prince Shahriyar, c.1625 or later copy.
An oval portrait labelled Mughal Prince Shahriyar (1605-28), probably a copy of an earlier painting. Emperor Jahangir's fifth and youngest son, he was killed at the orders of his brother, Shah-Jahan. Here the prince faces left against a blue background wearing a fur-trimmed, gold brocade, long-sleeved chogha over his lighter muslin jama. In his right hand he holds a red flower and clasps the hilt of his firangi (straight-bladed) sword in the other.
