recto:
Portrait of Muhammad Shah, c. 1750-80.
A portrait of Emperor Muhammad Shah seated at a jharokha window wearing a plain white jama, his head surrounded by a gold halo infilled with green. He faces right holding a small flower in his left hand.
verso:
Gallic Horse after Stradanus (no. 7), 17th century.
A copy of 'Gallicus' from a series of Wierix prints after Jan van der Straet (also known as Johannes Stradanus) of horses from the stable of Don Juan of Austria, c.1583-1585. As in the original, the monochrome horse rears to the left with a townscape depicted in the middle distance.
Like many paintings in this album, the ground has been overpainted with grass and flowering plants, which has also been added to the upper part of the painting to conceal a join where the paper has been extended above the horse's ears.
For further information on this album see RCIN 1005069.Provenance
Probably acquired by George III after 1800.
