Garangan, 17th century
The inscription in Persian under the small, mongoose-like mammal reads, 'the name of this creature which is found in Bengal is Garangan'. It is portrayed in grassland with a pale blue sky above. Surrounding the painting is an 18th century pale grey coloured border decorated with bright flowering plants in yellow, orange and pink.
verso:
Davar Bakhsh, c.1625-30.
Portrait of Mughal Prince Davar Bakhsh (1603-28), grandson of Emperor Jahangir. He faces left against a dark green background and wears a six-pointed chakdar jama; a gold embroidered patka; a jewelled, feathered turban; a pearl necklace and a large gold pendant. In one hand he holds a small rose while the other rests beside his tulwar sword. The tufts of grass and flowering plants in the foreground and the streaks of blue, white and purple above are later additions.
The inscription 'Sultan Bulaqi' refers to Davar Bakhsh's nickname.
