recto:
Imaginary bird, early 18th century.
Originally a horizontal painting of a long-necked bird with its head lowered against a plain background, the image has been mounted vertically. The later addition of ground, represented by grass and flowering plants, and the sky as horizontal streaks of blue, purple and white above, give the impression that the bird is mid-flight.
verso:
Prince Salim hawking, c. 1600.
Painting of Prince Salim (later Emperor Jahangir) on a hawking expedition at sunrise. He is surrounded by a party of courtiers and shikaris (hunters) on foot and two on elephants behind. One carries a long musket and another a sword, while two hunting hounds drink at a pool in the foreground.
