    recto:

    Four Mughal women, c.1720-40

Similar to the folio opposite (58v, RCIN 1005068.bg), a composition of four separate paintings of Mughal women, each under a blue cusped arch with gold arabesque decoration:

[top left] A young woman stands facing right against a hillside. She holds a rose in front of her face with her other hand extended in greeting. The grass is painted a very dark green and the sky a cornflower blue.

[top right] A young woman stands facing left on a strip of grass against mauve background. In her hands she holds a blue and white flask and cup.

[bottom left] ] A woman stands facing right on a golden stool. She wears a sheer muslin skirt and pearls as she wrings out her hair, a large lota vessel and ewer beside her. The background is in painted two shades of green.

[bottom right] Almost the same as the previous painting in reverse, A woman stands facing left on wooden chappals (shoes). She wears a sheer muslin skirt and pearls as she wrings out her hair, a large lota vessel and ewer beside her.

    verso:

    Parrot, mid-18th century.

Painting of a red parrot standing facing right on the curved bough of a green tree against a plain background that has been painted gold. The image is surrounded by a pale yellow border containing pink flowering plants growing from rocks and by orange butterflies.
