recto:
Two partridges, late 17th century.
Painting of two partridges, one with a large moth in its beak, originally against a turquoise background. The current background of a green landscape with flowering plants is a later addition.
verso:
Yogi beside a shrine, late 18th century.
This painting comprises three parts of larger image that has been cut up and reassembled in the present composition. At the centre, an ash-smeared yogi with a long white beard sits on a tiger skin beside a marble shrine to the Hindu god Shiva. At the bottom left, a Hindu priest performs a fire sacrifice, pouring ghee onto a sacred fire. At the bottom right, a young man and woman sit in conversation.
