recto:
Pigeons, 17th century.
Painting of a pair of black and white pigeons against a plain background, the female in front standing on one leg and the male crouched behind. A golden dovecote appears to float above them.
The grass, flowering plants and sky are later additions.
verso:
Krishna and the Gopis, 18th century.
Painting of Krishna (labelled Kishan, meaning 'black' or 'dark'). He is dressed like a Mughal prince and sits in a white marble and gold pavilion framed by a window. He looks down at four ladies standing on a riverbank: two are in conversation while two are turned towards him, one holding a lotus flower.
