Calligraphy by Sayyid Ali Khan, Delhi, c. 1660.
A verse addressed to an emperor and a hadith (saying of the Prophet) on the topic of calligraphy, surrounded by red arabesque decoration on gold.
Sayyid Ali Khan was a Persian calligrapher from Tabriz. He migrated to the court of Shah-Jahan who bestowed on him the title Jawahir Raqam or 'jewelled pen'. He acted as calligraphy instructor to Prince Awrangzeb and as imperial librarian.

Mughal ladies on a terrace, Delhi, c.1660-1700.
On the right, a Muslim lady sits barefoot with a shawl looped around her legs to steady her posture while meditating (similar to a yoga patta, or meditation band). On the left, her companion has brought fruits and light drinks, possibly to break a fast.
