verso:Portrait of Nawab Asad Khan, c.1700
Asad Khan was Emperor Alamgir's Vizir-i Azam (Prime Minister) and held the (absentee) governorship of Gujarat. He is depicted in many paintings of Aurangzeb's durbars. Here he wears a long muslin jama with gold floral decoration, yellow leather boots and a long sword. In his right hand is a kharita, a gold brocade document pouch tied with string and a wax seal.
