Portrait of Mirza Shah Rukh, c.1610-20.

Mirza Shah Rukh (d. 1607/8) was Emperor Akbar's distantly related Timurid cousin and the ruler of Badakhshan until he was forced to flee to the Mughal Empire. He married Akbar's daughter, Shakr al-Nisa Begum, and was made governor of Malwa. Here he is depicted in 3/4 profile with a ginger moustache and freckles and his hands crossed at the waist. He wears a small round turban and a deep red jama under which are bright orange embroidered pyjama. His shoes are of the embroidered salim-shahi type with tassels at the toes.

Verse by Abdullah Ansari written on sand coloured paper diagonally across the page, the calligraphy enclosed in clouds. The two bayts are surrounded by panels of gold wash and the remaining areas of the page are decorated with floral decoration in gold.
