Portrait of Shaykh Farid called Murtaza Khan, c.1610-20
Shaykh Farid from Bukhara (d.1616) entered Mughal service under Akbar and was elevated under Jahangir for the support he gave him immediately before his accession. He was conferred the title Murtaza Khan at the beginning of the year 1606 after which he became governor of Gujarat and later the Punjab. He wears a simple white muslin jama with a purple and red tie-dyed patka under another elaborated embroidered in red, gold and blue. He carries a large dagger and holds an arz dasht (petition) scroll.
