The first of six volumes published by Max Arthur Macauliffe in 1909 on the Sikh religion and its scriptures and presented by the author to King George V when Prince of Wales.
The author entered the Indian Civil Service in 1862 and was appointed deputy commissioner of the Punjab two decades later. While there he developed a close interest in Sikhism, eventually converting, and this substantial work is considered a definitive study of the religion.Provenance
