The first English periodical to offer reviews, the Monthly Review was founded in 1749 by the bookseller Ralph Griffith. It featured long reviews in the first part of each issue, and shorter reviews on lesser works in the second. Contributors included the poet and novelist Oliver Goldsmith, the musicologist Dr Charles Burney, the novelist John Cleland, and the actor and playwright Theophilus Cibber. The periodical ran until 1845.
